Hi! I’m Ben. I study early modern England, and I’m particularly interested in intellectual history, institutional history, and the history of science. My research focuses on knowledge production: how early modern people decided what counted as knowledge, who was authorized to produce it, and how they organized around it.
My recent writing examines the decline of the academic disputation at Oxford and Cambridge in early modern England. I argue that the disputation gradually lost its pedagogical and epistemic authority as it was instrumentalized by the state and religious reformers, and attacked by intellectuals.
